Turning Brewery Waste Into Renewable Energy at Citi Field

Problem

Citi Field opened a 10,000 square foot space adjacent to the stadium that was functioning as a brewery, bar, and restaurant with 120 seats and 60 rotating beer taps. The brewery’s production was going to result in a significant amount of spent grain as a byproduct of its beer and the team wanted to ensure the waste would not end up in a landfill.

Custom Waste and Recycling Program

RTS created a custom organics recycling program with the brewery team where the grain was properly sorted and deposited into a dedicated container to eliminate contamination and accommodate the large volume of byproduct. The grain was then collected with a special collection route and recycled through an anaerobic digestion process offsite. The digestion process also allowed the brewery to contribute to renewable energy as it produces electricity within the New York/New Jersey area.

The Result

From Brewery Byproduct to Renewable Power

Through dedicated containers, contamination controls, and specialized collection routes, RTS ensured spent grain from Citi Field’s brewery was diverted from landfill and recycled through anaerobic digestion to generate renewable energy.

180+ tons

of spent grain was recycled in one year
